Preservation of Paper based resources is the concern of the librarians, conservators and archivists through ancient times and is expected to remain so in the times to come. Paper quality hereby plays a vital role. To chalk out the requirements for preservation of a particular paper document, published by a particular publisher, or a paper on which something is written, it is highly intended to be informed about the quality of the paper. Standards for paper quality are being implemented. What is the trend and pace of implementation of standards for paper quality? What is the trend of the paper quality as used by the publishers? Accordingly, what is the trend of the pulp and paper manufacturing industry? This paper tries to search these answers considering data from the year 1980 to 2010, precisely from a librarian’s point of view.Keywords

Academic libraries, especially the college and university libraries in India, saddled with limited budget, meager technological know-how and human resources are facing continuous challenges to cope up with the growing users expectations in the age of digital revolution. Success of academic libraries depends on their ability to identify the vast and diffused knowledge resources in the library; find out ways of how to share the knowledge for future utilization. This requires academic libraries to reappraise their roles and responsibilities, to effectively contribute to their continuous endeavor to satisfy the needs of their diverse academic clientele. The article introduces the concept of knowledge and knowledge sharing and describes the role of knowledge sharing tools in sharing both tacit and explicit knowledge, within and outside the institute, to effectively improve library services under available budget and manpower.Keywords

Science Awareness is vital for every individual in a society and every category of people in a community. Public Library has ample scope, multidimentional modes and approaches, aids and tools at its end to ensure science awareness. It plays a leading role in taking up various sociological issues at all strata of society and community. The nature and extent of science awareness varies from an urban to a rural one, moulding its services accordingly. Technological advancement and IT mobilization provides wider perspective, giving a thrust towards fulfillment of its goal. However, lacunae still exist which needs to be traced out and possible efforts are to be applied for making the public libraries a pivotal centre in the science awareness programme of a country.Keywords

This paper provides an overview of how information technology is used in curriculum and instruction, and highlights the role of the librarian in this process. The significant increase in student numbers, growing diversity in the age and academic profile of students, the development of a competitive client focused ethos in the higher education, a greater emphasis on research have all led to radical changes in higher education and the method of instruction. The symbiotic role of the lectures and the librarian in the colleges in providing digitized lecture notes, which will help in e-learning helps the students to sharpen their skills and also develop new concepts. The function of the teacher is not to disappear; the access to lecture notes given in an organized way to learner community through the use of subject specific portals by the librarian will be more important.
A case study of the subject of chemistry has been dealt, with appropriate amalgamation of notes by lecturers and suitable subject portals, whereby students can learn the subject through web-based access.

The web has transformed the ways in which people search, find, use and communicate information. Web 2.0 technologies have become the subject of interest as they facilitate interactive information sharing, interoperability, dynamic content, openness, and user participation. This paper assesses the need for developing Information Literacy skills with the help of web 2.0 technologies in four engineering institutions coming under Moulana Abul Kalam Institute of Technology (MAKAUT). A questionnaire was the instrument used for data collection. The paper concludes that the concept of information literacy using web 2.0 technologies in the technical institute of MAKAUT is in a developing stage.Keywords

The school library is the birthplace of dreams and fantasies. The stories heard from the grandmother, mother, aunts and uncles get a reality when the children touch and smell the books, and feel the colour of the pictures. The pulse of the students is probably felt in the best way in a school library. In this paper, the real situations in the libraries of the Navodaya Vidyalaya India (boarding schools supported and subsidized by the central Government) have been discussed. These networks of school libraries are scattered all over India, with a special purpose to reach the unreached. These libraries are always buzzing with a lot of activities – be it book exhibitions, library quiz, discussion forum etc. From the simple of the simplest of exploring a journey through a book, to searching information through e-granthalaya (the software used), the students are beaming with ocean of information. The book week programme, story hour period, library quiz are only some of the activities mentioned. The paper will also discuss the dynamic effort of the librarians of these schools in trying to cater to fulfill the dreams of the students. The special effort of the librarians in training the students to love books is stated. Taking care of books by making special book covers, environment friendly book supports and book stands etc. are also explained in this paper. Last, but not the least, the paper brings into forefront the ways to harness a cordial relation between the librarian and the students.Keywords
